The Future is Oblright

By: Douglas Yee, Performance Director

Dave Olbright competed collegiately and was a member of the US Men's National volleyball Team. In 1978, Olbright earned NCAA All American honors. Although he may have lost a step over the years he never misses an opportunity to "pepper" the ball or run setting drills with his kids who both attend El Modena High School.

Dave has been involved with volleyball nearly his entire life and played with some of the greats including Sinjin Smith & Karch Kirally. He is an ardent supporter of youth volleyball as a coach, club director and father.

Over the years he maintained close contacts with colleagues in the USA Volleyball organization and worked with Coach Hugh McCutcheon and CEO Doug Beal to help increase support for the US Men's Team, now training at the American Sports Center in Anaheim. The team, ranked eighth in the world in 2006, is now ranked third and has qualified to participate in the Beijing Olympics this August.

"This volleyball program made an unprecedented move to a new facility and new training program in 2006 and it has paid off." Dave said.

After learning about the CATZ volleyball performance and injury prevention program for the Men's National Team, Dave enrolled both of his kids in the program and the entire club he directed.

"The CATZ training has not only helped to increase Jenna and Connor's performance, but more importantly, it has kept them injury free in a sport that is riddled with knee, shoulder and back injuries."

Dave added. CATZ is also training some of the top Pros on the AVP tour including Misty May-Treanor, April Ross, Jen Boss, Whitney Pavlik and Kelly Wing. (May-Treanor and her partner Kerri Walsh have also qualified for the Beijing Olympics for beach volleyball.)

Dave's love of the game has certainly rubbed off on his children and today, they are making names for themselves in the sport they now love. Jenna, a senior at El Modena was MVP of the Century League this past season and led the Vanguards to a second place finish in the league. She has accepted a full athletic scholarship to the University of North Carolina Greensboro in the Fall.

Connor, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, is currently being sought after by no less than 10 college programs. He was also selected to train with the top nineteen, 16 and 17 year olds in the nation at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The final twelve players selected will compete in the Junior World Championships at the end of this summer. Both have been training at CATZ since the middle of 2006.
