“The Biggest Loser” program comes to CATZ-Needham

"I registered for a half marathon being held on February 3rd, 2008 and instead of my normal training schedule of "logging miles" I concentrated on the CATZ training sessions. Between Dec.'07 and Feb. '08 I did only 3 runs of 10-12 miles. However, since joining CATZ, I have religiously attended from 2 to as many as 5 sessions per week. During this time I have seen my "core" strength increase, my sprinting and recovery time improve. Well, I ran the Surf City USA half Marathon in cold blowing rain on Sunday morning February 3rd. To my surprise and excitement, I felt GREAT the entire race and turned in a Personal Best of 1:43:21 which crushed my previous best time by approximately 15 minutes! My next full marathon is in April and I can't wait to see how I do then! "

CATZ Partners with Austin Independent School District

By: Jim Bell, Assistant Performance Director

Austin Independent School District is partnering up with CATZ Sports to beef up AISD's physical education program.

Wednesday, middle school physical education teachers and coaches met with Bill Meyer, a trainer at CATZ. Meyer said the key to success is to make working out fun for students.

"If you say, 'Run that hill 30 times and you'll get faster,' they'll look at you and go, 'Dangit, again?'" he said.

Meyer taught the teachers different workout techniques utilizing exercise balls and stretch bands.

The CATZ partnership is one of many initiatives within AISD's physical education program aimed at combatting several challenges facing students, according to AISD Physical Education Coordinator Michele Rusnak.

"We are fighting video games," she said. "Kids have to go home and take care of brothers and sisters and can't go out and play, and we have safety issues in the neighborhoods."

AISD wants to make sure students are getting their daily workouts at school.

Lamar Middle School Coach Dale Potter plans to use what she learned Wednesday in her classroom.

"If we take what we learned today and have our kids use it they'll feel better about themselves and hopefully a little more confident," Potter said.Rusnak hopes they will also live better long after gym class ends.
